Rear Differential...CASE CLOSED=)
No he was getting something no one had ever heard of. Instead of paying 2 hours maybe more in labor to see whats damged thats what atleast $120? Just go ahead and spend the $380 on a Auburn. If you rebuild that one expect to have problems again. If you tell them not to rebuild it expect to pay several hours in labor for nothing other than them to tell you it needs replacing and can be rebuilt or cant depending on how it looks inside. Which we already told you anyway. IMO I wouldn't have paid to have it looked at I either would have paid to have an open carrier put in or to get the Auburn or Detroit put in. If you have that crappy thing rebuilt I bet you have this problem in no time. Do a search on PS it seems like everyone has had this issue just about that has one of these trucks.

Don't even waste your time bluebeast2. He already has his mind set anyway....I fear this will be another lessonfor him altho I hope it goes well in the long run. Remember how you arn't such a good judge onwhere toget your truck serviced. I as well as many others would have went to the otherother shop right across the street. Why? Just as Reid said..."For differential and gear issues, I take my truck to a 4x4 specialty shop. These guys see more gears in a week then a lot of regular shops see in a year. They do gear upgrades, lockers, and limited slips installs in jeeps, trucks, buggies, etc all the time. Think about how much experience a general mechanic shop or an engine performance shop is going to have with 4x4 truck gear setups compared to a 4x4 specialty shop that does them all the time." Just makes COMMON SENSE pretty much. Heck it may even be cheaper. Wish ya luck.

I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Especially saying he has his mind made up. My guess is he is going to get them to fix it then we are going to hear in a few weeks or months that somethings wrong with it. I hope I'm wrong but I haven't been in the past with this kind of stuff.

Im calling it that he gets his stock LSD rebuilt. Why else would you put an hr of shop time into checking if the carrier is ok. Idk what an hour of shop time is out your way, but its around 90 out this way. Not to mention even taking it to someone to open it upwhen you knew the lsd is going bad. There is 2 hours of unnecessary shop time. We will call shop labor for this exercise90 / hour to make the numbers easy. There is close to180 out of pocket before any work is even done. There is half of an auburn right there. Good Luck!

Also, that specialty shop you mentioned that has the yota's parked out front, I bet everyone of those rigs has had a gear swap and probably lockers or spools. I bet they wheel the **** out of them too. Those would have been the guys I would have wanted working on my differential because I bet they know their stuff when it comes to building a stong differential, and putting it together right. Keep in mind, most well built trail rigs are probably going to look like crap on the outside, but they will be built with strong components by people who know what they are doing.
I really hope this new shop does ok for you though.
I agree the Toyota's sound like they are used for wheeling which are usually the people that do gear swaps and lsd's or even more so lockers. They may know what they are doing of course it could be a horrible shop that doesn't too but I wouldn't let the look of the trucks fool you.
You guys shop rate is high. I think it's only $55 an hour here or maybe $60. It's somewhere around that. This is ofcourse at shops not the dealer. The dealers are a lot higher. The shop I used to work at has one of the best if not the best mechanics around who is really good with rear ends and pretty much everything else so I get him to do all my work that I can't do.

Are you guys serious? Why would I ever want to get my stock LSD repaired? It's why I'm having this initial problem to begin with..
Yeah, he called me back. He said the carrier is messed up. He said that the entire housing is destroyed as well including the spider gears, bearings etc. He told me the LSD started falling apart on him too in pieces as he was trying to see how the carrier was, so now my truck is not moveable. So even if I had let the transmission shop put that new LSD in, they would have to stop once they found out the shape of the differential. He's telling me I'm going to need a near rear end, or at least a used one. So yeah, the LSD has to be replaced no matter what, but it's even worse....that LSD tore up everything inside their except the ring and pinion gears. Where do I from here? I'm only 2 hours of labor into the job guys, relax...Stop saying I don't listen, that's what I'm doing right now.

The LSD's are the carrier. Like the Auburn and stuff when you buy it for the $357 plus shipping from the place I told you about it has the carrier. You replace all that anyway unless rebuilding it. The Auburn will be the cheapest bet probably. I can't tell you where the cheapest place to get a Detroit was as I don't remember but if you want the name of the shop I got the Auburn from let me know. I paid $357 and $15 shipping. They told me $15 but it ended up being $14 something so they charged me that. I had to pay tax as I'm in the same state but I doubt you will do that if they will ship it to you. I ordered it at 2:30 that afternoon or so and had it at my door around noon the next day. Like I said I only live 3 hours or so away so it may take you a few extra days to get it. They still were awesome to deal with and had the best price I found.
If you want the name of them let me know.
Why did he need to inspect the carrier and all that knowing you had to replace it anyway? Thats what we are saying and wonder why you paid 2 hours labor to know what we already told you for free.
If it's just the carrier it should be included with the aftermarket LSD. If it's something else you might need other parts. You more than likely need bearings too so I'd just go ahead and replace those I did. If the R&P are fine why would you need a whole new rear end? This sounds like another one of those mechanics. Are the gears and all okay? It sounds to me like from what your saying you just need the LSD and bearings. Then some gear oil but if you go with the Auburn make sure you don't let him put synthetic gear oil in. If you go with another brand make sure if he does want to put it in that it calls for it. Synthetic gear oil is bad for LSD's and can cause damage.

Wait I saw you said the spider gears were destroyed. Maybe this is a good time to just get the 4.56's if you want them. Then either don't use 4wd until you do the front ones or do the front ones now. If you want 4.56's I wouldn't put 4.10's back in there if you will want to change them in the near future. I don't like used parts for stuff like this and if you buy a whole new axle you may very well get one in the same shape as you have now. It shouldn't be a ton more to go ahead and get the gears. They aren't super expensive they just are expensive to have put in.
Well I had him check because I wasn't sure if it infact was broken. If it wasn't broken right now, I wasn't going to fix it right now. BUT, now I know, so I'm glad I had it checked. But what about the housing, and the spider gears? He is saying the carrier smashed those up pretty good. If I buy an Auburn LSD, it will come with the carrier. Then, I have to buy a bearings kit seperately as well. But what about the whole housing situations, he's saying it's beaten up very badly as well as the spider gears. Can you give me the information I need where you got your Auburn LSD + carrier? Also, can you help me find a detroit true trac unit as well that will come with a carrier too? Thank you very much. I am in no hurry to rush to decisions guys. I am going to wait everything out until I hear from you and listen to what you guys tell me. I know notihng about rear diffs...so I am all ears.
