Default Sounds like pinging???

Hey guys,

I have a sound that happens right after the TC locks up at about 45mph, right where the RPM's drop from about 2100 to 1500.

On 1/4 thru full throttle I hear nothing, but if I accelerate very lightly (you know, grandpa-ing it) I get this noise right at that point that sounds like pinging, but it sounds far away, somehow softer and fainter. It's not as loud as the ping I got running the superchips on performance with 87octane and a bad plenum, but it's still a ping like sound. That metallic, fast, tinkle/rattle like a beer top in a bottle.

Anybody know what it is exactly?

beer top in a bottle? does it get worse if you floor it? Just curious, ive got a rattle too, I previously thought it to be the TC but turned out to be a Sparck Knock.. still need to fully diagnose the prob.. Mine sounds like u dropped a couple of beeds in a metallic tin can and rolled it around a bit,, seems to happen more while driving at an incline. Higer octane gas (92) with 2 botles of Octane booster (STP) seems to help allot for my truck

You both have ping. I should know as mine has done it for every one of the 100k miles on it. If it's real faint and you can only hear it with the radio and fan off, I don't worry about it. When it gets worse, it's probably time for seafoam or a tune-up.

sounds like ping... one thing that will help is a fuel cooler. I just did this on my 4th ride (2 bmw's, 2000 Ram & now 2001 1.8t jetta) and each time it has worked awesome. on the cars I got more low/mid power (very noticeable) and on the ram (too heavy to really feel) 6.5% better hiway mileage... on the bmw's I was running an agressively tuned chip that required 93 octane (only have 91 here in cali) and doing the fuel cooler mod + wrapping the fuel rails to prevent heat soak helped alot. I think however the wrapping of the fuel rails may be overkill. On the Jetta I have not had time to wrap the rail yet and when I touch the rail after running hard it is pretty cold. I still plan to wrap it, just not sure how much of a benifit it gives. On the V8 though, definately wrap it because of where it sits...

That's possible, I might have had too much 87 octane in the tank for the amount of octane booster I put in. Been running the SCT on performance setting lately and that's the only spot I've noticed the pinging sound.

TC locked up, part throttle, and low speed/rpm creates a condition that makes pinging most likely to occur. I have an MSD adjustable ignition and use this situation to retard the timing just enough to make the pinging stop. Then the engine never pings during any other driving condition.

Those are the exact symptoms, figured it might be pinging because the engine was lugging to get the RPM's back up.
which MSD unit are you running?

I would try the Seafoam or MCCC first and let it soak.
Then maybe a cooler range spark plug.
Ever have the fuel injectors flushed?

Ran MCCC last month,
Injectors were Sonic bathed at the same time. Modded kegger, replaced rear main seal, oil pump, waterpump, and timing chain over spring Break. Cleaned injectors while the keg was being modded. Only run top tier gas too.

I run the stock heat Champion truck plugs, I'll try a heat range cooler on those. Didn't have good luck with the Autolite 3923's but those would be a cheap try again.

I think it's the heavily advanced timing on the SCT tuner, but I'd like to try to get it under control rather than have Sean pull some timing out.

Go get some Champion Truck plugs. They work alot better for me and you'll actually see the difference when you swap them. The part number is in my sig. Btw, I didn't have luck with 3923s either. They pinged alot worse.
