Default Fuel Gauge and Light

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD Ext. Cab with 42000 miles. What could cause the fuel gauge to read empty and the fuel light to come on (I even get to hear the chime) when it is full of fuel. I have only had this happen twice and both times I turned the ignition to the off position and restarted. Upon restart everything is fine again. What I really want to hear is that the problem is not located in the fuel tank. I have always driven Chevys and I know how they work for the most part. Now I have two Dodges (an '04 Durango as well) and it seems to be a little bit of a re-education process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your fuel sending unit is going bad. Which is attached to the fuel pump in the tank. DO a search for it. May even be a detailed report on how to do it in the DIY section.

Thanks for the input, I'll search it out and see what I can find.
