Default Has anyone done their own Tint?

I bought some yesterday and I'm planning on installing it today. Does anyone have any tips on putting it on?

Thanks

Don't know how it is where you are, but by me you can't have the side windows completely covered with the dark tint. Bought mine with it already on and the boys in brown told me remove it or ticket. Apparently full coverage isn't legal on the side windows or at least not appreciated.

Yeah I've tried a few times and its never come out like I wanted. As for tips make sure both sides of teh window are super clean. Spray water mixxed with a drop of baby shampoo on the outside of the window and lay the tint up there. Use the outside to cut your pattern. Then spray both the tint as with the water/baby shampoo as you peel the back off. Then spray the window down good. Then stick the tint up there. This way you can move it around and it just slides around. You can now trim what extra you may need to. When you have it right spray the tint so that your squeege doesn't scratch it and try to work all the bubbles out of the sides. IMO it's hard to get it cut exactly right. Thats the hardest part but then it has also been hard to get the edges to stick like I wanted. Which windows are you tinting? If you tint the ones with the factory tint it's easier as it hard to see imperfections through the factory tint.

On my truck I tried to do one of the quad cab windows but didn't like how it turned out so I went and got it professionaly done. Its one of those things that you will probably spend more than it costs to just have it done before you get it right if you have never done it before.

Home has a couple of good tips

I have tinted windows a few times. It can be a pain. Dont do the front driver & passenger or a ticket may happen. I would try to take out the back windows before tinting it will make it a lot easier. The rear window should be easy. It is flat & easy to get to.

Use lots of water/shampoo. Keep everything wet. Squeege from the center to the edge to get out bubbles.

Were I live it's legal to completly black out the windows if you want to but, I'm only doing 20%. The tint cost me 10 bucks so I though I would try it.

Why not buy the pre-cut tinits off of e-bay?

Pre-cutsare pretty cheap. I have had mine for over 2 years and they have been fine

It's perfectly legal where I'm at to do the sides, been pulled over numerous times (For other things) and never a word said about the windows...

Where do you guys live? I'm not aware of any states that will allow you to black out the front side windows.

Home at some good ideas, but you dont put the tint on the outside of you window but on the inside of the window. If you put it on the outside it will get chipped from rocks and other things that might hit the window.

I did a couple of my windows and the main thing is to have patience. You can mess up very easy and you can't correct it when you mess up. Just make sure you spray both side of the tint, especially when you pull the flim of the sticky side. You can't over wet it, but if it doesn't have enough wetness it will try to stick when you move it around to get it in place and then it kints and you can't fix it. If you have a full back window you will need to have someone help you get it in place. Then the patience of making sure you get all air bubbles out. Then on your side windows dont roll the windows down for 1-2 days after, that way it can fully cure to the window. Then thats it. Make sure not to do it in direct sun light or on a really hot day because it will be hard keeping the sticky side wet and getting it in place.

Just take you time and do it right, because if you rush through it and don't do a great job you will see it later when air bubbles start forming and they only grow in the heat.

Careful with the cheap stuff. It usually uses ink based dies that will fade in a few years and turn into a purple haze. The more expensive ones use carpet dyes and usually come with a warranty againt fading.

Go slow, and when you do the side windows, pull out the little rubber seal on the inside and run the film from below the level of the door to 1/32 of an inch away from the top of the window. replace seal afterwards but DO NOT move any of the windows with tint on them for a few days otherwise the tint may move, dry unevenly, bubble up or any of the other things you do not want it to do.
