Default Retrieve Check Engine Code

How do I retrieve the "Check Engine" light code from the computer without a handheld computer? I have heard/read of the on/off/on/off/on but have tried it with no success. Perhaps I am turning it on and off to fast or too slow. When I turn the ignition to on (without cracking the engine) when do I turn it off? When the odometer appears? Before any lights show up? After the ABS light turns off? There are so many options.

I have tried holding the trip reset plunger then turn the key on and that worked (received the CHEC in the odometer) for diagnosing the dash but still cant get the P-Code.

Any help would be great.

I dont think it works on the 99. I have the same as you and I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that it won't work. I too tried with no result, wishful thinking i guess. Autozone willdo it for youI think there are a few other places that will do it as well.

i'm thinking it works on all the models w/the digital odometer. turn the key to on (where all the lights come on), and then back one click, on, off, on. do it sort of slow, about 1 sec apart, stopping in the last "on" position, and watch the odometer.

if there are no codes the odometer will immediately flash p/done. if there are codes it should flash each code a couple of seconds apart.
