You only have the one on the rear axle. You can try checking the connector, and see if it is corroded, or some such, but, if that doesn't work. Replace it.

Default Output speed sensor

1998 dodge ram 1500 OUTPUT speed sensor is in the front of the vehicle and it does screw into the tranny. Beware when you take out the bad one you will get a tranny fluid bath. I just replaced mine in 10 minutes flat and yes I am a female. symptoms of needing one.....truck will not shift in anything but 1 and R....speedometer stopped working....had this truck since day1 and it's been babied only have 60k miles (and a brand new tranny at 45k compliments of dodge ))

Take a pic, because the only sensor towards the front of a 98 is the temp sensor.

Guys, sorry if it looks like I'm hijacking the thread. I thought it would be a waste of bandwidth to start a whole new one.

Regarding replacement of the sensor, part number 56028187AE on top of the differential:

should the new one just pop back in? Do you have to force it? Should I prep it with any kind of gasket? it looks like the red "O" ring (like in the pic) that comes on the part is the only seal. Is this correct?

any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Clean the area as good as possible before removal. Then be fairly gentle when pulling it out. Wiggle it from side to side carefully, while pulling it up. And lets not go where we are all thinking! LOL

You're killin' me.lol

I already got the old one out, but was wondering about installing the new one. After I've cleaned the surface/contact area, and tried to clean the connections on the male/female connectors, does the new one just pop in, and the red O-ring is basically the only gasket?

A little rear end grease wiped on the oring wouldn't hurt and would make it a little easier to pop in, but it's not a major requirement.

Default Tranny won't shift to third or stay in gear.

Hello. I have a 1999 1500, 5.9L V-8, AT 4X4, 130K miles.... I am having an issue with the truck not shifting(20-30MPH) unless I let off of the gas. Also when I apply a small amount of pressure to the pedal it shifts down as if I were trying to pass another car, I have to let off the gas again to get it to shift gears. I HAVE changed the tranny filter and fluid with no change. I am going to check to see if the Cruise works when I get home. Could this be the output speed sensor(tranny)? Thanks guys for any help or suggestions...
