Factory Differences - Sport - Off Road - SLT
Alright fellow DF posters,
I have long been curious as to the actual differences are between the "Sport", "Off Road", and (what I presume to be) Stock SLT 4X4 Rams in the 2nd Gen Trim.
I assume its various packages, gears, skidplates and the like. What I am more curious about is the real truth behind the "factory 2 inch lift" rumor I read about on the Sport models. I have a 97 1500 CC4X4 thats a SLT. From what I can tell this would probably be the bottom end between the 3 models.
So, whats the real scoop?

The Sport models, height wise, are no different than the normal Rams. All the "Sport" package does is give you a color matched front bumper (as opposed to chrome with black trim or others), and on the later models (1999+) it also places the fog lights further out to the sides than the standard model. There might also be a few other minor differences, but thats basically it.
The "two inch higher" setup is on the "Off Road" edition Rams.
The basic trim is the ST, I think, and then you have SLT, and then SLT Laramie, and you also have the Sport model thrown into that mix as well. The higher trim you go, the more features you get/could have got. You can have an "Off Road Edition" SLT Laramie or Sport model.

There is also the extremely limitedIndy model and limited SS/T model.

on my sport the head lights are one peice and more expensive than reg...my grill had to be sport model only cause of the size it seems dodge made them a lil smaller in heighth for aero i guess and the fog light deal and my painted bumpers and i got power everything and some accesories i have to decipher what will fit and what will not cause some items say not for sport or sport only....its a bunch a bs and it drives my nutz but ilove my truck.....jay
Oh yes, I forgot. The reason your headlights are more expensive then regular is that Sports have four headlight bulbs instead of just the regular two.
Unless its aftermarket, I don't believe the Sports have a "one piece" headlight. The plastic bracket, or whatever you want to call it, that the bulb housings fit into is one piece, just like regular Rams, but I believe the sidemarkers can be taken off separately. I would not disagree with you, except I've seen several Sports with just the sidemarkers replaced with the clear ones, and the headlight housings left stock.

Yeah the sport is just an appearance package. Painted bumpers and tail lights, different headlights, later sports different front bumper, painted grille and I the grille is different on later ones for sure maybe all of them, just stuff like that. Do the sports come with differnt wheels? I may be missing some stuff but thats basically what it comes with.
The offroad package comes with a trussed D44 axle up front, 1.5" or so lift over non offroad rams, 17" offroad edition wheels, transmission cooler(some say this was on all some say it wasn't on all of them), 4:10 gears, Offroad decals, tow hooks, tracloc lsd, and I think thats basically it. I may or may not be forgetting some stuff.
