I own a dodge ram 1500 2001 4X4 with a 5.9L.... Well the other day the I saw my check engine light was on and then noticed my speedo wasn't working. Well I checked it with the OBD-II and it said my VSS was out. Well went to the dealership and they said that my transmission had two VSSs' one input one output. Well i found one but not the other. I found the one located before the transfer-case. Where is the other one? Anyone else had this problem. I was told that by the dealership that the other is located on the top of the rear differential and was like $100. My gas mileage is killing me since I drive near 20 miles a day in traffic so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe there is a sensor on top of the differential where the dealership said it would be. The $100 is a dealership price (they have a really high mark-up), I'd check around at auto parts stores to see if you can get one for cheaper.

here's a pic and part number of the sensor on top of the rear differential. watch out, its saying there is a different part number for manual trans.
SMP brand is available from NAPA and other auto parts stores.
it's probably about $25-40.
