i run Q horsepower 4x4, or castrol when funds are low. i always leave it a quart low and add "Restore" to my oil. helps keep the engine running good.

I just switched to Shell ROTELLA® T SAE 15W-40. Seems to be ok and whether it's the oil or something else, I'm not burning as much and my mpg is a little better.

Just don't go to a semi-syn. I never knew before but, apparently any amount of synthetic in regular oil can be called semi-synthetic. So, you roll the dice if you're getting 10% synthetic or 50% synthetic.

That change interval also depends on your driving conditions.

Okay well I guess my next question is if i want a bit more of a mpg boost, what is the best oil to use? A thicker one? I live in MN so I would need to switch back to 5w30 in the winter so I dont damage anything during our winters but how about the summer?

This link may help you decide what to put in your truck; I use Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic Blend 10w30. I receivedof those Blackstone labs test kits but I haven't used it yet.Blackstone lab will send you a free testkit andtest your motor oil for about $20.In theory, they can spot problems before they happen;this is how they check locomotives and other large machinery, according to Blackstone.
Royal Purple and Amsoil are steep for my budget but I have purchased Mobil Synthetics and Castrol Syntec. IMO, the next best brand is Valvoline.
I hope that helped.

amsoil is actually cheaper, because they will test your oil for free, all you have to pay for is the tool that pulls samples out. The oil may be 10 dollars a quart but when you can use that for 25,000 miles, and valvline is around 3 dollars(i think), you get say 5,000 miles = 15 dollars per 25,000 miles = 5 dollar saving per quart x 5 quarts = 25 dollar savings in just the oil, not to count the filters, and the time it takes to drain and refill your oil five times.

Just for a reference, before I used synthetics, when I was a kid, my dad had I think a 84 dodge halfton 4wd. He rad 10w-40 valvaline. He changed his oil every 5,000 miles, and when we sold it the truck had 280,000 miles. The motor ran perfectly, but the reason we got rid of it was that we were going to change the gear oil in the front and rear end, and the front end was bone dry. My dad didn't have the money to swap the front end so he sold it before it quit working

My truck has 145K and the summers in Oklahoma are hot. What weight should I use. i use 10W30, should i use 10w40? I know its not a tight motor anymore.

I use castrol GTX. Although i don;t think thats the right oil for high mileage. I have heard that thicker oil is better for compression.

I used engone restore...wow, that stuff works. Had a .5 increase in MPG. Do i have to use it every oil change? Someone told me it cloggs the filter. So i just get the extra capacity mobil 1 304 filters. they can hold 3/4 a quart of oil inside it. So i get to add a little bit more oil to the engine.
