Don't do the 14 inch air cleaner. You will lose torque and driveability around town. You only see gains in the top of the powerband.
I am glad I asked this question. I started doing more research and found that this truck has all the common problems wrong with it. Thanks to all you guys that answered. I have a lot of work to do to this old rig. I'm just thankful for the insight I got before I started just bolting on parts. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do about the transmission?

I wouldn't have bothered. I'd have just dumped the motor or not bought it at all.ORIGINAL: IndyRamMan

This is a very popular upgrade for our trucks, and i've never seen anyone report loss of drivability around town or lose of torque. What are you basing that opinion on?ORIGINAL: Viper37

Gotta call BS on that one. The extra air flow probably blew out your plenum gasket and thats why you lost torque. The 14x3 was the best bang for your buck thing i've done to my truck. Deffinetly gained on the low end (I never really see the top end). ORIGINAL: Viper37

A better flowing air cleaner can not make you lose torque or driveability. Think about what you just said.
Now if you put it on wrong... or you didn't have an oil breather that might cause some problems... or if you dropped a bunch of dirt or a couple of screws down your throttle body when you were putting it on. But it's deffinetly something you did wrong.

The fact that my truck was hard to drive around town with the non-factory air cleaner attached. I'm basing my opinion on my experience.ORIGINAL: Silver_Dodge

My plenum is fine, my gasket is fine, The 14x3 killed my low end torque. I tried a Napa and Holley air filter, and got the same results.
Why the **** would I lie about that?
Think about it.

I am looking for advice. Do you think I will be wasting time and money? I have searched the forums and seem guys with mods done to higher mileage engines.
I've got 109,000 miles on mine and I have the mods in my sig with plans for a 52mm TB and some 1.7 roller rockers in the future. My truck runs almost like it is new. Well, almost like new with 30-40 more horsepower than new.ORIGINAL: kj4cwa

I never accused you of lieing, so just chill. It's just that you're the only one to make a statement like that about the 14x3 filter. I've been running it for a long time, and never noticed any such thing, but that's just me.ORIGINAL: Viper37
