strong odor coming from exhaust
I am checking to see if anyone might know why my truck has a strong gas odor??? I have a 96 ram 1500 4x4 and when its running it has a strong gas smell coming out the exhaust. Do these trucks have the charcoal canisters on them that filters out the exhaust??? I am going to check my cats to see if they have been hollowed out.
Running overly rich would cause that.
Check your cats. I'm betting they've been hollowed. Is the exhaust stock?
Check your gas mpg's for a little while. Depending on your engine, it should be in the 11-15 range in the city. Also, check the PCM for stored codes. You could possibly have a bad O2 sensor causing the engine to run on a closed loop constantly.

to answer you question about the exhaust filter, no there is no such thing. There is however a charcoal filter that is connected to the top of the fuel tank that pulls vapor through the gas cap valve and into the charcoal canister, which then dumps the vapors into your throttle body, that could cause a gas smell around the canister, but not out of the exhaust. my guess is to check the o2 sensors to see if your running rich
how do I check to see If I am running rich??? Will the O2 sensor be wet or something? Just trying to see what I need to look for to see if I have a bad o2 sensor. I have the 5.9 motor 4x4.
