Default 97 Front axle shaft questions 4x4 Dana

OK, I have 97 1500 4x4. It is new to me and I bought it knowing it was broken. The previous owner broke the yokes off of the right (passenger) side of the front axle and stub shaft. I want to repair it but I am confused about the parts needed. An aftermarket dealer is telling me the axle shaft has large splines because it slides into and intermediate shaft and the intermediate shaft engages the pig. Is this true? I looked at one "complete" inner/outer shaft assembly but there was no way it was long enough to reach the pig. This is the long side of the differential and all the parts I have looked at on the net look far too short to reach. Can someone who has had this apart give me some advice? I have searched and read what I can find here on the forum, but the right side configuration is still unclear to me. As most of you know this is a Dana 44. Any pictures of the parts would also be helpful. Also a length of the inner portion with the yokes would be helpful. It has been years since I had one apart.

Thanks![/align]

If you look on the back of the axle tube you will see what is called a CAD. (central axle disconect) About half way to diff. It's a vacuum unit that engages or disengages the 4 wheel drive. The outer axle only goes to there. From there towards the diff is the intermediate shaft.

BTW! Putting a new axle in is easy, but, since the yokes were broke you will want to install a new seal. And thats not so easy without the right tools. And when you get the new axle make sure you get a new bushing for the end where it meets the intermediate shaft.

And if you decide to replace the seal you have to remove the intermediate shaft to make installing the seal easier, you should also replace the intermediate shaft bushing/bearing.

I don't think I can post a liink so if you want more info on where to buy parts PM me.
