It is the return line. You need the special tool to disconnect towards radiator and just the right size wrenches to get it off the steel line

use the special tool to disconnect from rad. and quickly wipe clean and connect new hose

Cut the steel pipes right behind the fittings, buy some hose, 4 hose clampsand a tranny cooler, and install

Never have to worry about the check valve screwing your tranny up either

I'm sure you're aware, but I'll say it anyway. Whatever tranny fluid you lose doing this make sure you replace with ATF +4. That part is really important.

mine has a hose clamp on it, was there (and leaking) when I got the truck. I just make sure it's tight every few weeks

I'm pretty sure that hose was recalled on my 96. You may want to check before doing anything.
