Question on a wheel cylinder upgrade
I have a a 2001 1500 4x4 with drum brakes. Will a wheel cylinder from a 2001 2500 4x4 fit? I 've been through the search engine and pretty much anybody who asks this gets unanswered! I know aim4squirrels switched to a chevy cylinder and it screwed it up, but this a dodge to dodge switch so it should work, right? Also how can i tell the left cylinder from the right, or is it obvious. I've only got one in front of me right now cause the other is backordered.
Thanks ya'll.
Thanks ya'll.
The 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton wheel cylinders are all the same for the 2001. They are all the same part # at rockauto.com. Which is why I tried the GMC swap, unfortunately enough had changed on the brake system for the 2001 that the swap wasn't compatible. It's obvious when you install them what's left and right.
Oh well thats reasurring. I was getting a little nervuos after reading all of the posts about the swap not working. Thanks man.But wait a sec, that means I'm not really getting an upgrade now am I?
Nope you're getting the same wheel cylinder. Best upgrade you cna probably do to drums is get a good set of shoes and swap out all 4 brake lines with Stainless steel braided lines. On the front you can add powerslot rotors and a good set of pads
Oh, one other thing. If you look at the back side of the back wheels from under the truck, there's a little slot at the bottom of the wheel with an oval plug in it. Jack up rear end, pull the plug, and tighten the star adjuster (make it spread out) until the brake shoe just rubs the rear wheel when you spin it. You should have better brakes.
Yeah I know about adjusting the star wheel and all. But it anywho, they've gotta work better then the og's! I don't think I'm gonna go with the braided lines yet. I just wanted a little better braking for this road trip I'm going on next week. One week in Palm Springs Ca, its gonna be hotter then hell, and I'm pulling two boats back to nor cal.
