wheel bearing question
My worst fears are true. You can NOTreuse the nut on 2000-2001 2wd models and only these models. Instead of a cotter pin, it's a Ny-lock nut. Which I find a bit unsettling. I just get a really bad feeling about parts of this caliber not using a cotter pin setup. With all the rust on myspindle I worry about breaking the seal before I even get it torqued to the hub. I guess time will tell.
Some tips for changing out the front hub on a 2000/2001 2WD 1500. Don't reuse the nut. It is NOT a cotter style nut and can not be reused. It's a nyloc nut which is basically a standard nut the has a ring of nylon on the front lip and as you put a fresh nut on the nylon heats up and melts to the spindle making it nearly impossible for the nut to back off. That being said once you get the old nut off clean the spindle well or it'll mess up the new nut. This nut is nearly impossible to find anywhere but the dealer. Even most dealers don't have them. I called 3 before finding one with this nut in stock. The best way to break the rust sealon the nut without even having to try veryhard is use a floor jack. What you do is set a breaker bar so the the bar is in a position like this \. Place the floor jack under the handle of the bar and start jacking. You only really have to jack it up about 6"-12" and the rust is broken. Use the weight of the truck to your advantage. Also I used a 36mm 6point socket not a 1 11/16.
