Default I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 with tranny problems

I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 2x4 automatic 318. This is the problem, when I purchased this truck it had quite a few miles on it and it needed some maintenance so I took it to the local Dodge dealer. The dealer was given carte blanche to replace and repair what they found in need of maintenance and repair. They replaced a lot of parts and did a great deal of maintenance. Before they received the truck it drove and shifted fine. After they changed the fluid and filter the truck slipped and had a delay going into gear when cold. After a second fluid and a different filter the truck no longer slips when shifting but still has the delay when cold problem. I have to think this should be a problem that can be fixed fairly inexpensively as the shift problem was nothing more than the wrong filter being installed. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on this as the local dealer is rather untrustworthy - they gave the truck back without bothering to rebolt the steering column in, didn't tighten the caliper bolts on the front brakes, said they replaced all 4 ball joints but didn't touch them.

Try putting it in neutral for a minute before you go to drive and see if it still does it. If it has one maybe they removed the check valve or it is stuck.

welcome to the wonderful world of doing things yourself.

sometimes a tranny fluid change on a transmission that hasnt had new fluid in a while can be fatal. clutches that have used that old fluid will start to slip with new fluid. I would drain the fluid again, get mopar ATF +4 and refill it, add lucas transmission stop slip (which IMO is awsome) and see if that helps any. Also adjust your bands.

A haynes manuel comes in handy. try to do all work yourself, the forum is a very handy tool, and if you get stuck we can give you a hand. Doing work yourself makes sure the stealership doesnt take any shortcuts or forgets to do things, which happened to you.

Welcome to DF

haha, you came to the right place.

I've done all kinds of stuff to my truck that wouldn't have been possible without this forum, a haynes, and a few knowledgable tech guys from various places.

I don't call myself a mechanic, not everyone here is, but if you can turn a wrench and have a decent amount of patience, it's funny how much money you can save.

I hope you can help, here's my issue. I have a 1995 Dodge Ram with the 318. It belonged to my nephew and he was several hours away and ask me to come get him and bring a trailer that his transmission had gone out. I did and parked the truck at my house where it had sat for about 1 1/2 years. He finally told me I could have it that he wasn't going to fix it so I put on a new battery and it ran fine for about a day. Then it started acting up like the transmission was going out but I'm not sure thats it. It will crank and idle fine shifts into gears fine but if I go down the road it will start to lunge at about 10-20 MPH and about 30 is tops. It revs up like i'm going 100MPH but still about 30 is tops (on level ground), it will slow down going up hill. It lunges in drive or reverse. I have been told torque converter by some but others said if it was fine for a day than that wouldn't be it and I would be able to hear it while it was idling. Any ideas?

My 96 Dodge had the same problem, And what I did was talk to the people at...WWW.CascadeTransmissionParts.com And they told me just what I needed and after installing these parts my Transmission runs like new. I have posted this before but not many people are reading it. What I got was..............................................

Governor Housing Base Gasket

12328B1$6.88$6.8847RE Governor Solenoid Borg

12432AB1$56.88$56.8847RE Pressure Sensor 96-99

12415B1$59.88$59.88Universal Drain Plug Kit

3020S1$14.88$14.8847RH / RE Filter Kit (R) 88-97

22011GR1$16.88$16.88Subtotal: $155.40 Shipping & Handling: $0.00 Tax: $0.00 Order Total: $155.40
And you can install it yourself just drop the pan and the filter and it is all right there no need to tear into any thing else. They have a video on you tube showing how to install it. I also put a drain plug in this time to make it much easier to change the fluid next time. Good Luck PS Here is the You Tube Site..

Thanks for sharing the video, however, I don't think its pertinent to this particular transmission problem, since he has a 46RH transmision. The video appears to deal with the 4xRE transmission.
