on my 94 4x4 the steering knuckles have two....well things....that stick out on top where the caliper sits. My chilton book calls them machine ledges, my question is, what the hell do they do?

I guess what I should have put is, is it possible for the machine ledges to wear so badly that it would cause your front brakes to fail
