Default check engine light

hi everyone i have a 1996 1500 360 with 83000 miles on it.the check engine light just came on .can someone give me some sugestion on what to check for,thanks...
ps are these trucks like the voyagers where you can turn the key so many times and get the codes.if thats the case i will try that first...

96 Should be OBD2. If you have an Autozone or auto supply that lends code readers do that. Until last week you could borrow code readers to use in the parking lot at Autozone in California. No longer. Some liability bs or the mechanics got together and shut them down. Probably varies from State to State. If you can't borrow one you will either need to buy one or pay a mechanic. Ebay has cheap (29-) or so readers you can plug into your laptop.
