#1 is the check valve. you can unscrew it and replace it cheap. the rubber hose will rotate on the radiator fitting, or you can pop it off with a '3/8 inch fuel line disconnect tool'. ($5 at local parts store). you disconnect at the brassy colored bell shape at #2.

regardless of how you remove the valve/hose, atf will drain out, about 1-2 qts, less if you can plug it up (recommended) as soon as you disconnect.

the radiator actually has 2 separate sections. a big section for coolant, and a small section for atf.

its also ok to remove the check valve, and simply clamp (or replumb) the hose back onto the hard line. i removed mine, no problem.

^^ I am looking to rebuild my transmission soon and a mechanic at the shop I spoke with told me my truck couldn't drive in reverse with the check valve removed. I told him the truck hasn't had a check valve in it since I bought it three years ago! He was rather mystified.

i just get in it and go. no problem.
check fluid level in neutral. checking in park will give a false reading.

Well guys my problem from above is back again, I took the check valve off last time and it seemed like it was fine not stuck so i clean it out and put it in ran the truck for a week with O/D on and off and it was fine, but last night the O/D turned off and a few min later the trans temp came on, well I was almost home again so i made it and looked at it I have a leak still from when this happened last that looks like from the tranny pan gasket, even though I have tightened up on the bolts. Also I checked the heat on the lines, The bottom line going into the rad with the check valve was hot like it should be, the rubber line coming out the top of the rad was hot, but where that rubber line meets the hard line going to the factory trans cooler was not hot. Both of the factory trans cooler lines were cold, not hot at all! So I think its clogged, what do yall think. And can I take it off and clean it myself or should I go have the tranny flushed. Thanks again guys!

well, i'm not a transmission expert or anything, but, if it was me, i'd disconnect both lines from the cooler, and blow the cooler and lines from both directions with an air hose, and see if anything came out. then i'd try to reconnect the lines without the check valve.

have you drained and changed your fluid recently ? if so how did things look ?

if the check valve is getting clogged up with something ?, my concern is what is that something ? there's not supposed to be anything in there except nice clean oil. if the check valve is getting clogged, then the filter might be next, so you might want to check that again too.
