ATF+4 only. valvoline brand is about $5/qt. mopar brand is more.
46RE on 5.2/5.9
6-7 qts, check level in neutral only, not park.
stock setup is no drain plug. its a good idea to add one.

RE: transmission ????
the old fluid will eventually cause the tranny to fail. New fluid has more detergents and may break up some sludgy gunk the old fluid could not handle and clog up the new filter. That's why you should check it after 1K. Also, since it's not a true flush, you'll work out some more of that old fluid as well.

dump old fluid, replace trans filter, clean magnet etc., install drain plug in pan. drive about 1K miles and just do a drain and check fluid and refill. If fluid is gunky, pull pan and replace filter again. Then go 1 year/12K and check again.

i mostly agree, but recommend you blindly change filter on the second change. the new fluid puts a lot of sludge in motion which will clog the new filter. also - the first change only replaces about half the fluid. tc, vb, cooler, lines hold a lot.
