Default Tran Problem

5 Speed Manual, V6, 1999 ram. Tran stays in fourth--no fifth or any other gear. Put into neutral and it stays in fourth. Problem started with a clunk and at 75 mph.

4th gear at 75 MPH? Hmmmmmmm.
What does the fluid look like?
Have you looked at the shift linkage? Is it still intact?
If linkage is good and still functioning, you may have a bad fork. You'll have to pull the shift tower off to find the cause of the problem then.

That's an NV3500 trans. I think it's a toploader... The problem is going to be either in the shifter or the shift rail. Put the shifter in neutral. If you take the console and shift boots off, you'll get to the top of the trans. The shifter should be held on with 4 bolts. Take them out, lift the shifter off. Look to see if the bottom of it is busted. When you look down inside the transmission, you'll see 3 shift rails side by side with a notch in each one. If all the notches are lined up, it should be in neutral. If the truck is still in gear and all the notches are lined up, you've got problems deeper inside the trans.

If the notch in the MIDDLE rail is forward (toward the engine), then there's a problem in the shifter or rail. I've had the spring in the shifter of a Chevy wear out and the shifter would jump out of the rail. This MIGHT be the case. Reach down there with a screwdriver, and push the middle rail back so the notch lines up in the center. Put the shifter back on and see if you have all the gears. If this solves it, buy and install a new shifter ASAP.

And if you can't find the piece that broke off the shifter.................hope and pray it settled down to the bottom of the case and it stays there.

I don't think that'll even help if there's busted pieces down there... The gears on the idler shaft are REALLY close to the bottom of the case if I remember right... If there's a piece in there, it'll get picked up eventually...
