I don't have a strap wrench! Is there any other way of loosening the fan assembly nut without a strap wrench?

 

my strap wrench broke doing this. my water pump came with a new pulley on it so i drilled a hole in the old pulley and stuck a breaker bar in there.

 

Put a large screwdriver/flat bar diagonal to 2 of the pulley bolts

 

use a 14 mm socket and ratchet to tighten the belt tensioner pulley that will tighten up the belt and hold it strong enough to take fan off

 

i recommend putting sum soft setting pipe dope like gasoila on the water pump pully threads and the water pump bolts too i did and now i dont worry if i ever have to change out the waterpump or fan again will never sieze again but willhold tight.

 

How much is involved in replacing a waterpump in a 1500 5.2L engine? About how much time and teardown is involved? I'd appreciate a fast response.

 

When I had to swap out my water pump I just put the proper wrench on the nut that holds the fan on and gave it a quick jolt with a dead blow hammer. I didn't think it would work (my dad suggested it) but I figured I would give it a shot and sure enough it broke it right loose. I don't exactly remember how long it took me to replace my water pump, but I think it was only a couple hrs at best, and I try not to rush projects to make sure I do them right the first time.

 

yeah, id say 2 hours is a good estimate if you have no problems and you stay after it......i just did this saturday......unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the fan to the clutch, (not the pulley bolts) and that will let you take the shroud off b4 the waterpump and itll make it a lot easier

 

Thanks to the Arizona summers, I have replaced my water pump (and radiator) more times than I would like to admit. Here are two ways I was able to loosen the fan:
1: Put pressure on the serpentine belt to the right of the fan pulley and use a crescent wrench to loosen the fan. Use the grip of the belt (if it is new enough) to hold the pulley in place.
2: I bought a medium sized chain about 4 to 5 feet long, bought a bolt that would fit through two links and a hook. I attached the hook to one end of the chain and wrapped the other end around the frame under the battery and bolted the links together. Attach the hook to a hole on the fan pulley (some fan pulleys do not have holes) and take out the slack. I used a crescent wrench to loosen the fan.

I cut mine off with a torch to get the fan off.
