Hey everyone , I just picked up a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 , extended cab 4x4 , I think it is a sport , and I think it has the off road package and tow package , however it does not have a skid plate , but the trans and transfer case were both rebuilt when I bought it , so I am assuming they did away with it , it has a fiber glass roll pan style bumper in the rear , it has a 360 Magnum with an auto with overdrive , and the overdrive is a button on the dash , when should the over drive be on ? only on Highway or what ? The truck came with 17 inch tires and rims , but when I checked the door it is only suspose to have 16 inch , and I figured that was what took the speed sensor out , cause the speedo does not work ,, is that correct ? I love the way this truck runs and drives it has other issues that I need to take car of , like leaking intake gaskets , but I am jsut trying to get an Idea of what I have and how to care and maintain it properly ,, thanks

 

sounds like it might not be a true off road truck if the door sticker is saying 16". Any one with a Off Road able to help?

That's not a offroad because the offroad package was only offered in 2000 and 2001. BTW as for the door sticker sometimes they are wrong as mine says 16x8" wheels I think and It has the offroad package with the 17" wheels and all the other things the offroad package had so I know it's the offroad edition but the door sticker is still wrong however in his year they didn't offer the offroad editions.

As for the wheels those aren't the offroad edition wheels anyway. Maybe a newer Ram or something.

my 01 will shift into o/d way too early at about 45mph and then has no power, so i turn o/d off for around town <55 and turn it on when i'm on a decent highway at >55-60. my engine has no torque below about 1800-2000 rpm.

i'm guessing your 96 is a mechanical speedo ???, driven by cable from a gear in the trans or t-case ????

nice truck. looks like your missing the lower trim from the front bumper.
