One or both of you will break something and you'll both look foolish.

If your 98 runs like my 97 you WILL get you A$$ handed to you . For one the 5.3 is one mean s.o.b. lots of bottem end and almost a snappy as the 327. They are twice the engine the 318 thought about being and their is alot more backing for them than the 318. Chevy is known for making more power per cubic inch then any other Manufacture from the factory. You stock to stock are allready on a down hill advantage if you do just hope he's stupid and punches it of the line and gets his tires hot and slick first.

My uncles Suburban with a 5.3L would have yanked my 5.9L wherever it wanted to take it. That thing felt like it had a fair amount more power. Then the 6.0L in my buddies 2500hd truck is soo much faster and has soo much more power it's not even funny. I don't like Chevy's but honestly one may be my next truck. I'm just not liking the 12mpg with no power when the Chevy's can put out 15-20mpg easily and have way more power and be much faster of a truck. Thats my biggest complaint about my truck. Dodge's are like Harley's they have huge engines but don't make much power and are slow as crap.

its more a matter of torque and weight, and gearing... oh and traction. if you get the jump on him, and get him to break the tires loose you will win. Otherwise I am sure something will break.
look on youtube, there are TONS of truck pull offs. it honestly doesn't mean anything. what you should do is find a trailer, weight it, then do 1/4 mile times. but got some bad news for you... your 98 is rated to tow 5500lbs. or something like that.

if you do plan on doing the tug of war, make sure you are in 4lo, and have good solid tranny parts.

best of luck, and take video then post it so we can see.

edit:
here are links, but to me it means nothing.

here is a good example of how it means nothing, a dakota yanks a suburban.

here is a cummings getting pulled by an avalanche

so IMO it all means nothing.

I have to agree i always like the second gen rams for thier styling but coming from owning and driving chevys i have to say if i had the money i would pull my 318 and drop the CTD in so i would atleast have some power.

Not trying to diss you or anyone else on a Harley. It just seems like most guys I met my old boss included. Him being the main one buy a Harley do tons of mods to it them brag about how it can do 105mph and how it can pull the front wheel up with 2 people on it in 2nd gear. Me being a sportbike guy and owning a Yamaha R1 find this to be a joke. I have a stock R1 that I didn't have to put tons of money into the motor on and it will not only do 105 it will do 186 or whatever it's computer limited to. I've never been that fast however. It will also easily pull up the front wheel at speeds faster than my boss's old Harley would go. Then it handles a ton better too. I just don't get the fascination with Harley's but he really seemed to like his and seemed to like to brag about how much power it got. I don't get it. They can't be that more comfortable to ride than a sport bike either as a lot of them put you at akward looking positions.

I like motorcycles but never been a Harley guy. If I wanted a cruiser Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda make some nice ones.
