lastrights I was wondering if the datalogging etc. works on the 2nd gens. That would be a nice feature that I never had with the 3715 I was running on my '98.

The reason I ask is because I've heard of guys advancing their timing chain set via the optional keyways, but I've heard that the PCM ends up compensating for most of it and that it doesn't work quite the same as it used to on older style engines, kind of like turning the distributor doesn't work like it used to.

I'm sure I'm probably missing something in there, I just don't know what.
These are two separate issues: valve timing and ignition timing. The valve timing in relation to the crank is mechanically set in the Magnum engine. At the factory, the stock cam is simply installed "dot-to-dot" and that's the end of it.

When you install a custom cam grind, you have to degree-in the cam to make sure that the cam's geometry is the same as advertised on the cam card. In most cases it will be, but sometimes you will have to adjust the cam a few degrees advanced or retarded to get it "degreed-in." On some wild cam grinds this becomes a necessity or you will have valves getting intimate with pistons!

As for ingition timing, a hot cam may allow you to run with more spark advance for greater efficiency at higher RPMs. As far as I know, a PCM or tuner cannot "undo" the valve timing setting on an engine any more than the old mechanical advance/retard at the distributor did. For example, with the better flowing heads and mild cam I'm istalling from Hughes, I may need to get a custom reflash so that the PCM can better handle the new air/fuel and ignition curves that my engine may require.

Question

Has anyone had any problems with the pinging problem returning after installing a performance tune?

I don't have one yet, which is why I'm asking. Since the 'death flash' stopped the ping problem, I wondered if undoing it would cause the pinging to return.

man, i have the Hypertech max energy but it basically only has the speedo, and rev limiter for my 5.2L all the other options havent been written for my truck so it kinda pisses me off and itll only let you play witht the 3 stage towing program if you have a deisel so if you think the superchips is a bad dude i migth sell the hypertech and go superchips....i do have a question though...if i bought a stroker kit and converted the 318 to a 390 would the programmer still work since they only list the 318 and 360 stock models?

I am running NGK plugs in my truck, but I started getting a little mild pinging with the performance tune. I did put a tank of Marathan gas in it that really caused it to ping (10% ethanol 93 octane). I just reset the truck to the 87 tune until I ran most of it out. I then filled up with Shell 93 octane (on my last tank) and reset the truck to the performance tune. It still pings but not nearly as bad as it did. I am thinking I may still have a little of the bad gas in the truck, because it never pinged before on the performance tune. If it still does it after a couple more tanks, I may switch to a colder plug.

How many of you guys experiencing the pinging have repaired your lower intake gaskets (plenum)?
