Default the source of the grinding

This grinding/whinning sound i could only hear after the engine was warm. the grinding sound was and is coming from inder the hood i was thinking it was the alterantor so i removed the belt and tryed moveing the pully up and down to check the bearing. the alterantor was all good so i moved onto the water pump that was it i can move the fan and the pully about a 1/4".

So now i am going to replace the water and since i am going to need to remove most of the frunt of the motor i am going to replace the pentium plate. I was also going to replace the cap and wires.

The engine has over 200,00 miles on it would you suggest also replacing the timing chane??
If so what brand and type would you suggest? also what other items would you replace??

thanks fot all your help

yes. if the chain has never been replaced, its shot. secondly, the timing cover is part of the water jacket seal. third, your front seal is probably shot and leaking oil. you'll need an impact wrench and harmonic balance puller to get the balancer off. you can rent the puller. impact ?

timing chain kit - just get the Cloyes brand oem replacement from any local auto parts store for $40-50.

You can get that big bolt off with a 24" breaker bar as well, you just need to keep the crank pulley from turning. You can wedge a small socket in pulley holes and wedge it against the timing chain cover.

good idea on the small socket. i'd recommend a block of wood between the socket and timing cover so all the pressure is not concentrated in one spot. timing cover is just aluminum, which is pretty soft.

Yes 200,000 on the stoch chain was thinking it was shot. Only after reading some of others posts where the timing chain was replaced, and the things that stoped ie the small miss at idle, slite power loss. I planed on replacing the frunt seal allthow have not seen any leaks. I do not wount to put old parts back on. do not wount to do this agine.

As for the tools i have the impact gun i will be picking up the puller i love shopping for tools

The replacment chain you suggest the Cloyes brand it this one dobble roled?? I have read some where around hear that that it the way to go. Also is this one nylon coated like the stock chain?? I do not wount that coting I do not mind the so called noise it could cause.

thank you for your help i hope to get to it this week.
i will keep you up on what i find.
