Default 2001 Ram 1500 Tranny Problems

Hi, I'm a long time reader (been lurking around for 2 years+), and a first time poster. I have a 2001 Ram 1500, bought it in January. It is a Quad Cab, Short Bed, 4X4, with a 5.2L and an automatic transmission. It had 76,000 miles at the time of purchase, and now has 85,500. I haven't had a single problem with it until today. I started it up this morning to go to work, and the check engine light stayed on.
The truck was extremely slow to shift out of first gear (at least I thinki iit was first, I'm not a car newbie, but I'm no expert), sometimes the engine got up to 3000 rpms or more until it shifted, and when it did, it was very rough. The same happened in second and third. The truck did shift into overdrive at 50mph, as usual, though.
I took the truck to AutoZone to have the check engine code read, and it came up with this: P1762. Does anyone know what this means, and what I'm in for? I know all about the Dodge tranny issues, and at 85,000 miles, mine is right in the "target area" for failing trannies.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I love my Ram, and I want to get it running right again as soon as possible! Thanks for reading such a long post!

SYMPTOM
P1762-GOVERNOR PRESSURE SENSOR OFFSET VOLTS TOO LOW OR HIGH

Grab a new filter , 3 extra QTS trans fluid and the sensor change it...

The VFS in 1996-2002 46RE transmissions are known to not be as reliable as we would like

I had the exact same problem. You can find the schematic of the tranny on the internet, unfortunately I can't remember where I found it. The governor pressure sensor should cost about $75, replace your tranny filter and fill it back up with ATF +4 or ATF +3. Be sure to use those, nothing else. If you use dexron or mercon, you'll have some troubles. Dodge trannies hate them.

Well, I wasn't able to find the part at any local part stores, so I called the dealer, and they want $117 for one. I'm just going to get it from them, I know it's more money, but it's actually not too bad considering the dealer price on a lot of parts. I was expecting the guy to tell me like $300 or something crazy like that. They also have them in stock, so I'm going to pick one up tomorrow after work, and hopefully get this done on Saturday morning. I've never done anything this involved before, even changing my oil is an adventure for me. I'm guessing I take off the the bolts holding the trans pan on, a bunch of fluid will come out, and then the filter and sensor will be sitting there for me? I have no idea, and I hope I can do this. I'll post back with the results. In the meantime, any heads-up or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks to you guys for all the help you've given already.

Replace the sensor and solenoid while youre in it.

Well, I replaced the Governor Pressure Sensor today. It wasn't too bad of a job. The problem hasn't gone away though. Check Engine light is still on, and the truck is revving to about 3500 rpm sometimes before shifting when going from a stop. Also, when I'm in OD, at about 50-60 mph, it can't seem to hold the speed without downshifting very often, and going to about 3-4000 rpms. I have 3:55 gearing with 285/75/16 tires, but they shouldn't be big enough to cause the problem. Also, I've had the larger tires on for about 2 months, and no probloems 'til now. Am I looking at a total rebuild here? Any advice is appreciated!

What did the inside of the pan look like? The fluid?
