Default Freeze Plugs

I just found out one of my freeze plugs was leaking. One of my friends said that you have to hammer the old freeze plug into the block and then just hammer the new one in, is this correct? If not what is the proper way to install them?

well.... that's one way, but i don't like the idea of the old freeze plug floating around inside the block and potentially clogging up a water jacket somewhere.

better.... if you can get a punch or screwdriver into position and either punch holes in it, and/or dent the rim in several places, then grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out.

And clean the hole and put some permatex indian head gasket maker around the hole(brown sticky stuff) . Start it with a hammer gently, then use a socket or something with the same radius and tap in to same depth as the old one.
