Question 2001 ram tranny cooler?

Hi, I have a 2001 ram with a 46 re.I purchased it new, but am just getting around to installing a tranny cooler. This truck does not have the towing package, but the cooling lines from the tranny go directly to a cooler between the radiator and the condensor. I was expecting them to go into the bottom of the radiator. Did D/C mistakenly put a "towing package" cooler on my truck? Again this truck does not have the towing package, and transmission cooler is not listed on the build sheet, and I am the only person who has ever wrenched on it. Thanks for any replies.

You're not crazy... my truck has a cooler between thecondensor and the radiator. As far as I know... it is not equipped with the camper package or any of that other stuff.

I think all 2001's have it. I was reading through the 2001 FSM (posted on this site) and it seems to imply it is there for every truck (for the year 2001 anyway).

Here's the snippet from my build sheet:

NFVS - 35 Gallon Fuel Tank
NHBP - Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler
NHMP - Speed Control
NMC - Heavy Duty Engine Cooling

I always wondered what the HD engine cooling was. I think it's just an extra large radiator, but I'm not sure. Look for the NHBP in your build sheet.

Default I think I figured it out.

After reading the service manual I found out that on 2001 1500s the standard cooler is the air to oil behind the condensor. I am used to the standard coolers running through the radiator, but on the 1500s if you get the towing package the aux. cooler is the radiator one.

With this in mind why should I even bother with another air to oil (aftermarket) cooler that is way smaller than the one already on there fom the factory?

In some things size does matter. The main thing that you need to look at is not size but BTU value. The coolers are designed to transfer heat and some small ones do a better job at cooling oil than other larger ones do. Look at B&M coolers. They are good coolers and are built right.

I thought I was crazy when I saw what looked liked a tranny cooler. Now I know I'm not bonkers.
