1999 ram 2500 rear breaks locking up
I have a 99 ram 2500 with rear break issues. When i and going less than 10 mph and press the break pedal the slightest amount the rear breaks completely lock and skid. I feel as though i am going to get thrown out the windshield.
When i am going fast more than 40 mph and i just tap the brake pedal i feel the brakes grab hard. It feels like i am pulling a trailer with electric brakes that are set to high. Then it brakes normally untill i get below 10 mph. The pedal gets hard and it feels like the truck wont stop. then suddenly the rear tires lock up.
My truck is equiped with a rear height controll brake valve that is designed to alter the brake ratio so the truck brakes better when it has alot of weight in the box. There is a mechanical rod that connects the valve which is on the frame to the bottom of the rear left strut. It is connected with ball and socket joints. The nylon socket wore out and the rod broke free.
This is when the problem started.
I had a mechanic replace the valve which he said was stuck and the arm. The problem was temporarily fixed. Slowly though the problem has been coming back getting worse and worse each day. Now it has been 3 weeks since the repair and it is worse than ever.
His new theory is that the front calipers are breaking unevenly which may be causing the rears to lock up.
Anyone have any idea as to what may be casusing this problem????

I have a 99 Ram with basically the same problem. Everything for the rear brakes have been replaced and I installed the larger GM wheel cylinders. The truck will run great for awhile and then they suddenly act like they are over tightened and lock up. I have to get under the truck and back off the adjusters for awhile. Then I can go back later and tighten them and they might work great for weeks until one day the just lock up again. Has anyone experienced anything like this and found a solution? Thanks
I've had this on and off for years. Much better after I replaced my rear shoes and wheel cylinder. Seems to happen more often when it's rainy and a coating of rust develops in the drum. After riding the brakes down half the block, it clears up.
