Engine knock or ping: Pissed off.
I have a remanf. 3.9L V6 in my 1998 RAM. It has about 1500 miles on the new engine. It began running rough in the hill country of Kentucky. Part of the problem was the failing transmission (was slipping under load); the trans. is now brand new. I'm pissed because I took it to a Dodge dealership and here's my gripe.
The engine never knocked before I took it in. I'm serious, never, ever detected a knock. I picked it up...and now it knocks.
Also, the manager claimed my distributor was improperly aligned, when installed. Claimed to have repositioned the distributor, check the timing and adjusted the timing. I am confused. I have read a little about the programming and chips. Perhaps, some reprogramming or a performance chip can remove the knock?? Seems to me like voodoo stuff...and a long shot at that.
The computer programs the timing. The distributor is set to zero and wahla...computer does it's thing. The manager was B.S.ing me? These engines don't need a manual, flash gun, adjustment or check of timing. SO, did he mean a computer flash (the "death flash"), because I do recall him saying he retarded the timing.
Can I insist the next Dodge dealership look into and give me the most recent program? Can they clear up my knock on my NEW motor!? Did the 820 mile drive back to New Orleans with this minor knock (only really detect is at idle and low RPM) doom my engine?
My mechanic mentioned the common problem with the fuel rail. The truck had been sitting and rust could have developed in the rail and clogged my injectors. Monday, this fuel rail and all the injectors are being replaced.
I don't want to deal with the engine warranty: has more exemptions then I can count. I had it professionally installed; now I have a knock. I spent nearly a month researching where to buy my motor from; it's not from Auto Zone or Checker. I can't afford this. $2300 for a motor, $2500 for a trans. $3000 or better needed for paint and front end parts. This dodge is breaking me!
Still hope I don't need a new motor, again.

just wondering why a v6 , it get the same milage as the 5.2 v8, check the oil in it. make sure its level, are you taking it easy on it break in.... mabe new spark plugs, or cap rotor wasnt put back on tight or wrong.... last resort you may need a death flash
