Default no power to brake controller

I have installed a brake controller on my 1996 Ram 1500. I'm not geting power to the controller. Is there a fuse somewhere that may be blown?

Did you have the factory installed wiring? Are you not getting power to it or not getting power the plug at the rear of the truck for the electric brakes? I had the later of the issues when I installed mine. After some looking I found the blue wire had somehow been disconnected at the firewall. Not sure where the other end of it was. It was neatly zip tied out of the way and looked factory but may not have been. I just ran it through the firewall and hooked it up to the plug and it fixed it. It seems like it ran from the back of the truck to the firewall and stopped. I don't know what the deal was. I've heard of others telling me I may see this before I even started trying to install it and that I needed to look for it along the fender and around in that area as Dodge left it disconnected on some.

I am about to wire mine and a '96 is a slightly different beast.

I have a Tekonsha P3 and plugging it into the factory plug with their adapter plug I get power to the controller. The blue brake power wire runs through the firewall to a plug just behind front drivers wheel (the plug is different in 2001s, not sure when it changed). If you don't have a factory tow package, the wire goes into the one plug, but not out the other. You can take and put in the correct spade connector and run the wire to the rear.

What I am highly debating is to find a donor truck that had a factory tow package and replace my wiring harness from there at the wheel well to the rear. So far, all I can find are donor harnesses that have already been hacked by people pulling parts at the bone yards.

It would be pretty easy to just run all new wires for this thing I'd think.

True, but I like the idea of the factory wires.

In my case, I just need to run the wire from the brake controller for my brakes. I already have a 4 way harness in, the Hoppy type that just plugs into your existing tail light harness.

One of the reasons I like the idea of the facotry harness is they wired in the large 7 way plug and the power all runs through relays. I would like to avoid burning up my light switch.

Really good info on Ram trailer wiring here. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/mods/el...ailer_wire.htm
