ok, here's the scoop.
the gadget on the front axle is the Central Axle Disconnect (CAD).
its vacuum operated, fairly simple, but can fail due to vac switch on t-case, vac lines, internally stuck/rusted, etc. it can all be troubleshooted and fixed relatively easy.
its expensive to replace, see junk yard or LMC truck.
i replaced mine with a posilok for about $200. i like it, and it removes all mystery of whether the axle is locked up or not.

i've got a powertrax locker in my rear. i like it. but, based on how it will spin/slide in slick conditions, i would not put one in the front of a daily driver.

I have the Posi-Lok up front and prefer it over the vacuum. Not so much for ease of use but rather freedom of use. It's nice to put it in 2L from time to time.
I have an Auburn limited slip in the rear and like it a lot. I would definitely recommend it for a daily driver and for more grip off-road.
I have an Ox in the front and like it as well. I've smacked it on a few rocks and it's been fine.

i have been studying and lookin at the CAD setup and am wondering if a locker is a good idea for it:? when installed and in 2 wheel drive will the vehcile act or feel any different? also what are good kinds to buy and how much do they cost and where to get them from.
