Could the next Ram be built by GM?
As for the 7.3L a turd I don't think I'd go that far. I've driven one towing a 24' long trailer loaded down with hay bails and it feels faster than my Ram when towing that.
As for the 6.0L gas motor and gas mileage isn't so bad. A good friend has a 04 Chevy 2500HD and it does quite a bit better on gas than my Ram and has a ton more power also.
As for the check engine light I've never had one since I've owned the truck for the last 50k miles either but I think it did have one before that. However, the CEL doesn't mean a whole lot as it's not engine related stuff that goes. When your transmission goes like mine it doesn't throw a CEL, when your dash cracks it doesn't throw a CEL, when your u joints fail it doesn't throw a code, when your rear end falls apart the CEL doesn't come on, when your pleneum gasket goes it often doesn't throw a CEL. It's just soo many things with these trucks that fail that don't have anything to do with the check engine light. The only thing I can think of major that is a common problem that set off a CEL is the cracked heads sometime set one off for a misfire and sometimes the crappy catalytic converters on these trucks set it off. There isn't much on these trucks that isn't crappy other than the engines and maybe the body but even the paint on the body seems crappy. The front axle and rear if it's a dana seem good too but they aren't made by Dodge they are made by Dana so no wonder.

I have only driven one 6.0l gas motor and its i guess got power, but being that i've only driven it around work since we got it on trade i wouldn't know about the actualy mileage on it. BUT, i'm pretty sure that i have never heard of anyone getting good gas mileage out of them. at least upwards to 20 mpg in a truck.
CEL doesn't control or monitor everything, your right. But it does give a good indication on how well the motor is operation or if there is something wrong with it. But with the 318/360 there won't be many problems because it has been out for so long. And my transmission is fine... maybe because it has a smarter computer
No no no I'm saying it moved faster with the trailer than my truck seems to unloaded with no trailer.

I'm not saying it gets upwards of 20mpg but it sure gets better than the 12-13 that the Rams get.
I agree the 360/318 is a decent engine. It has the pleneum issue and the issue with the cracked heads but other than that is a okay engine. Although those are 2 big problems so it's even in my book not the best design as those are expensive to fix. It's the rest of the truck other than the motor I think is crap. I think the motor is the strongest part of the Ram. The Cummins in the diesels is great but the rest of the truck isn't. I guess being on a Dodge forum I'm supposed to love Dodges no matter what but honestly I can't do that when it seems like most everyone with the exception of a few people like you and jason.w have a ton of problems one after another with them. It isn't cheap stuff either most of it is all expensive stuff.

My father in law has 1999 7.3L PowerStroke F-250 and its a puller. It used to get 20mpg HW or better, but since some shop drilled through his computer trying to install the wiring harness for his plow.... the new program/chip has him at 17-18mpg and he was livid. Anyhow, I used to drive that truck all the time when I just had my VW and building my house. I used to load his trailer up and once it got rolling you could hardly tell you were towing anything. I have yet to tow that much with the Ram, but I know when it comes to stopping I could kill someone. Dodge and Chevy from 94-2000 (or so) have the same brakes, and I found that they were all BAD. Anyhow, back to the orginal thought. I don't like the Fords interior compared to my Dodge. His seats feel like a commercial vehicle, and my Ram is like my living room couch. Granted it handles like a heavier diesel when compared to my 1500 gaser. He has had next to zero issues with anything else in the truck aside excluding the motor. Just balljoints and brakes. Typical of a truck. But no bearings, axle seals, AC parts, heater cores, transmission (had routine oil change), and what ever... He has had however 2 deer side swipe him, one just happen recently $4800 worth of damage. ouch.
So, I drive a dodge, I love/hate my dodge. Yes, we have had this discussion a million times, its old, its big, its heavy and it brakes like some other trucks, but in all honestly, lets not kid ourselves.... it breaks a lot more often than others.
I said that I will replace this with a Hemi... unless I see a sweeter deal on a Ford or Titan. Certainly never a chebby.
phew...
The fact is, it was all down hill after the "life style" pickup trucks of the 70's, that moved pickup trucks twoards the "comfortable" and "4 door" era. "Fit your wife 3 kids and the dog in the cab, and also fit your groceries"
IMO the last GREAT pickup truck Dodge built, was the mid to late 1940's Power Wagon pickup truck, that came into production from the WWII truck.
That thing was unstoppable.
