Default 12 valve?

Ok so i've been looking at buying a 12valve cummins.....

its old school...are there any benefits over a 24 valve? I heard if you simply tweak it a lil bit you can get a lot more horsepower out of it. Just adjust some settings.

Although, I dont wanna buy it and hate it afterwards.

Since nobody answers on the cummins section i figured i'd put it here.

exactly, they just don't start out with as much as a Common Rail or 24v would.

The 12V is more mechnical, so you can make big gains the old fashion way, installing parts. It is also a more reliable engine and cheaper to modify. The 24V out of the box has more power then a stock 12v, but it is harder to make the kind of numbers that a modified 12V is capable of. The 24V is more responsive to non mechanical changes, like tuners and chips for example, but it costs more to make power with a 24V. It is commonly believed that the 12V is the better choice for those that want to build up a serious power plant, and the 24V is a better choice for those that want to leave things mostly stock. I think the 24's get better mpg's.

If I were to buy another 2nd Gen, I would look for early year '98 2500 Cummins. That is the last year of the 12V, plus you could get the quad doors that year.

I was looking at a '97

its nice. its got 33s on it and and it has the 5 speed manual with 3.55 gears and it has about 139,000 miles on it. new black paint 4" exhaust system new grill new shocks and new sway bar. the interior was reupholstered and he says it gets 20mpg or better. He also said that he tuned up the fuel pump.

Hes asking about $8000 for it so I thought it was a good deal
