4wd question
I ended up rebuilding about 1/3rd of the frontend of my truck over the course of the past few weeks but now have a problem. Truck is an 01 1500. It won't go into 4wd. When I reassembled the front end I was uncertain of which way the interlock collar went in. I looked at several pictures in the service book and determined that the tapered end of the collar was on the passenger side of the housing. Also, I just want to ensure that I have the vacuum motor installed properly. The canister part should be facing the driver's side of the truck right? Truck went into 4wd before I had to tear it down (one seriously leaking seal was the initial cause then I found the Ujoints and one of the unit bearings was out). Basically I'm just looking for comfirmation that I put this thing back together correctly before I go get some basic vacuum tools to check all the lines and such. Thanks
The vacuum canister faces the passenger side. You got it in upside down. And yes the shift collar tapered side also towards passenger side.
And one more thing, did you make sure the small composite bushing was in the end of the outer shaft where it slides onto the intermediate shaft?

When you say composite bushing are you talking about ensuring that the outer axle nub fits into the inner shaft. There was no "bushing" when I took it down that I saw.
Ok, so I got the solenoid in upside down. I'll give it a try and see what happens if I swap it around. Do you have a pic of how it should be so I make sure I I'm 100% right on this. My email is jsimmerman@verizon.net Thanks

Well I don't have a pic but that is the way it installs. How did you do that work without at least a Haynes manual? Even the Haynes has a pic of how it's installed.
As far as the bushing goes, you just didn't see it , but it's there. And hopefully it didn't fall out when you took it apart. When you remove the CAD to install it the right way, make sure the outer axle doesn't wobble up and down where it connects to the intermediate shaft. And have the front end off the ground when you check it.
