After two years of slow death, trany finally dies.
When I first joined here almost two years ago it was to find answers about my 46re. In the time since, through constant band adjustment, and putting all kinds of gook and additives into the transmission; it ran well. It would slip here and there and struggle between 1-2.
I kept reading about the high costs and nightmares associated with transmission shops. So I figured I would rig it and ride it to death. Along the way I bought a 46rh, I didn't know it was a rh at the time so I didn't use it.
So now I only have $1000. I can't afford at this time to get it rebuilt or get one and do it myself. So I found this junkyard that says they have a 2001 ram with the transmission. They charge $43 for ALL transmissions. So I figure I could get that, then order a high quality rebuild kit, and use better than stock rebuild components.
If I screw up royally I will only be out the cost of parts.
I've been putting it off for so long. I have been wanting to learn how to re-build trannys. I have a FSM and a 46re manual plus the stuff here. I think I will be able to do it. I have a lot of tools and a big garage and workshop.
Even so. I always like to hear suggestions, "don't do this"'s, and other tips and tricks for getting the transmission out, and suggestions on brands or specific parts to buy for the rebuild.
For now, the transmission sticks in first, it shifts at 4500 sometimes, I am just gonna park it fo the next few weeks.

I had problems with mine not wanting to shift then sometimes it wouldn't downshift, so I took it to the local tranny shop, the replaced 2 parts inside and it was fine, almost exactly 1 year from then and it started to do the same thing, so I took it back to see if it was covered under warranty and he said a line of crap that it could be about 5 different things that would make it feel the same but they would put it on the computer and see what is going on, then I go pick it up and he said my options were trade it in, buy a junkyard tranny, or pay them $2000 to rebuild it. So, I leave and all of a sudden it won't hardly move, it wasn't that bad before they looked at it. Did they do something to it because it was under warranty and wanted to make money instead of doing it for free??? I think so!! If anyone has a trans. they would sell for my 01 Ram 5.2L 4wd or want to buy my truck for pay-off let me know at: midnighthunder75@earthlink.net
Thanks!!

See the last poster reminds me of all that I keep hearing. I know I may be able to get a rebuild for $1300, or that I can do it myself with good parts for less than $500.
I am going to the yard tommorow to get my $45 2001 46re. I am just going to rebuild it and then install it. The other one I will keep in case I mess something up, or I may have it rebuilt or sell it as is.
