Default cat question

Hey Guys,

Today I called around to the local auto parts places and they are telling me for my 2001 ram 2500 360 v8 that I need to go directly to Dodge to get a replacement cat. Apparently it comes with a Y-pipe on, I called dodge and they want $844 for this part!!!

I called a few local muffler shops and they all seemed confused when looking it up (i never mentioned what i already new) then gave me quotes from 700 - 900 dollars.

What are my options because to me this seems rediculouse!!!

I can do most of the work myself... any ideas?

Get a separate y pipe welded in, and the cat welded in downstream from there.

We do not have laws up here in Alberta YET to do with Cats. If I just put the pipe in what do I use to trick the after cat sensor? Will this mess with back pressure?

I have an 01 1500 and the cat is welded to the y-pipe. You need to get a univeral 3" in/out cat and an adapter from 3" to 2.5" and have it welded in. I opted for the magnaflow highflow and works like a charm (loud).

+1 for pcfixerpro's post. Around 1999 or so, some Dodge Rams were switched. Rather than a dual-in single-out cat, there is a y-pipe going into a single-in single-out cat. The fact that they can't find any is bogus, they make high-flow ones of both designs. They just don't want to mess with it.

Meineke did it all for me, and they thought it was dual in single out until they got underneath there. I told the guy it wasn't, he didn't believe me until we got underneath it.

Universal 3" in 3" out will fit, and then weld (or have a shop weld) a reducer (to 2.5") behind it to fit the rest of the piece.
