Unhappy tranny woes

i have a 96 dodge 1500 with a 5.9 4wd automatic, i have a factory manual and decoded the body code plate on the front of the rad. support and it says it has 47re but that dosent make sense because i found a list on the i net that says the 47re only came behind the diesel i have a trans for a 98 cummins and they look identical except for the bellhousing, whats the deal

Is the transmission broken or acting up? If you wanted to be sure you could always pull it out and tear it down and know for sure.

unless previous owners have done some unusual part swapping
you should have a 46RE automatic

in 1996 the 47RE still used the same outer housing as a 46RE
so don't be fooled by that

later model 47RE got extra stiffening plates on aluminum
and 48RE series got actual cast iron housings instead of aluminum

unfortunately 1996 was the first year of the 46RE and OBD-II pcm computers on Rams and they have more bugs and shorter life between rebuilds
