check engine light is on and im at school :(
hey guys, so im out at college. i have a 1999 Ram 1500 with the 5.9 and i have 102,000 miles on it. and i drive out to the super market, and everything is cool. then on my way back things get a little hairy. the engine was running oddly. the only way i can describe it is like the motor was working way to hard for how much gas i was giving it.
i get to the parking lot, and the check engine light comes on. So first go and check my oil, and there is nearly none. this kind of confused me because the oil was changed only 2 weeks ago. Also my oil pressure gauge was reading about 30 or 35. which i think was caused by the lack of oil. but i dont kno where the oil went. i looked underneath and see no leak. i drove to school which is 2 hrs from my house and no problems, so now i will probably get to the store to get oil. but im wondering if anyone has any idea, as to why this happened. any input would be great, im not exactly mr. fix it or anything. thanks guys

You say your check engine light is on, what code do you have?
With the engine off, cycle the key from off to on (without cranking the engine) 3 times leaving the key in the on position on the 3rd time. The codes should display on the odometer readout now.

If the plenum gasket is bad (and you don't know for how long it has been) it will ruin spark plugs, o2 sensor, valves and CC. I would not recommend you drive that far. You will break down or do more damage. Oh and btw, as stated above I would get the codes checked.

there is a small peice of rubber hose connecting a vaccum line to the throttle body. Check to see if that was dry rotted out that would explain why the truck was running higher than usual. Also you might not have a plenum leak. If you had the oil changed at a business they could have screwed you on the amount of oil they put in. You might call the company that did your oil change and ask them how much they put in. (God help you if your truck went to walmart.) I believe the oil level for the 5.9 was 5.0 Quarts
