2001 dodge ram 1500 sport 5.9 4x4, tranny shifts very weird, when you take off the line normal from 1st to 2nd shifts very late like at 3k rpm, all other gears are shifting ok, went to 2 tranny shops and ofcouse both of them said that my tranny is done and i need a rebuilt, i was hoping that maybe someone had a problem like this or knows what can i do about the problem, thanks a lot

 

You may want to consider these ideas first before deciding on a rebuild.

1) When is the last time you had the bands adjusted?
2) How does the level and condition of the fluid look?
3) Has anything been done to the truck that coincides with the beginning of these symptoms? (The TV cable may have been repositioned and may need to be adjusted)
4) Have you recently had the tranny flushed, and if so, was it done properly and thye correct fluid put back in...ATF+4 ONLY!!! (Not ATF+3, nor any additives, ONLY ATF+4)

This will at least give you a place to start looking for the cause.

 

fluid is ok, the system was never flushed, and as far as I know no bands were adjusted or the tv cable, the tranny shop said there is no band adjustment that can be done, if there is how do I adjus the band and where do I find them and where is the tv cable? im not too familiar with transmitions thanks for the heelp

I think you need to find a new transmission shop if they told you that there were no bands that could be adjusted.

 

That's what I was going to say, any chance you went to New England Transmissions? LOL

 

A good shop or mechanic would know which parts in the transmission affect the 1- 2 shift and could specifically check those. However, I've never found one. The only answer I ever got was "it needs to be rebuilt". crazyval, hopefully there is a simple fix for you. Contact some more shops.
I've had several transmissions stop shifting correctly over the course of many decades. I changed fluid, adjusted bands and the cable and never "saved" one. Has anyone ever saved a trans by just changing fluid and adjusting the bands?

 

I saved mine by changing and adjusting, but that is before it actually has gone bad. Almost 150 thousand and works perfect. You are right in saying that it won't save the tranny after it has gone south though.

 

At 70,000 miles mine was sluggish on the 2/3 shift until thoroughly warmed up (10-12 miles of driving). Had it flushed,filter change, and band adjustment done then. At 108,000 miles still doing good.

 

Mine won't exceed 60 mph at 1900 rpm. When I floor it, it will kick up to 3k rpms, but won't go any faster than 60 mph. just sucks gas like a slurpee and makes a "wummmm" sound
