ABS and Brake light on
1999 Dodge RAM 1500 Quad Cab
I had this problem rear it's head about 7 months ago and finally solved it so I thought I'd share this with the forum. This problem occured with the loss of cruise control at about 40 - 45 MPH and everything I could find pointed to the speed sensor back on the differential. Well boys I replaced that, then drained and re lubed the rear end all to no avail. I finally took this vehicle to Christian Brothers for another problem and in passing I asked them to diagnose the ABS and brake light issue and the problem was traced to the brake light switch that is just behind the brake pedal. I really believe it had only become loosened but paid for a replacement. A couple days later I noticed that although the ABS and Brake light would come on sometimes the cruise was still not working. I finally crawled my 65 year old **** under the dash and saw what the problem was... The switch behind the brake pedal twists and is supposed to lock in position. It was only catching on one side which allowed it to move around. I fiddled with the expert engineering of this wonderful device until I was able to lock in both sides. E U R E K A my cruise works the idiot lights remain off and I can finally get this truck thru inspection!
