Adjust them. You cant screw it up. There are only two bands in the transmission. 2nd gear band and reverse band.

*Somewhat of an update*

Last night I finally got around to dropping the trans pan again. I had to get the right torque wrench from my cousin so I didn't get a chance to adjust the bands last night, hopefully tonight. Well, since the last flush I did I have put about 30-40 miles on my truck before I let it sit for a while. Well, in the pan there was already some shavings on the magnet.

After talking to my cousin (he has a 727 in his demon that he has rebuilt 3 times, not due to bad rebuilds, because of rough racing) he said it sounds like the clutches are burnt up and it needs rebuilding. So, i'm still going to try to adjust the bands, but if I need to rebuild it are there any pointers? I was thinking of putting a transgo shift kit in it while I have it out (if it needs to come out), is this a good idea? Is there anything else I should upgrade while I am at it. Remeber, this is a daily driver, not an offroading truck. Thanks again!

Hey, another question, you notice if yours slips a little tiny bit right before it shifts if your floored, and does it bog at all in overdrive if you are going less than like 70? mines doing that, and I wonder if a rear band adjustment would solve that. thanks man!!

My truck slips in/out of reverse when I first start it, then I lose reverse all together when it warms up. Then, when going like 40 (accelerating slowly) and it is supposed to shift to drive, it just stays in 2nd. Then if I let off the gas, you can see the RPM's drop a bit, then a lot as if it is shifting into D. If you slowly hit the gas, the engine will just rev and there will be no power at the wheels, but if you jump on it, it quickly downshifts back to 2nd and takes off. I'm hoping to adjust the bands here in a few and then I will post up my results. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can at least buy some time on this trans before rebuilding it.

*Update*

Well, I got a chance to adjust my rear band two nights ago. I was going to adjust my front band, but the adjuster screw and the locknut were stuck together and I wasn't sure if I could take the screw all the way out so I just left it alone.

Anyways, I adjusted the rear band as per the instructions posted around here, put the an back on and filled it with fluid. Fired it up, Reverse (Ok. It did this before I adjusted the band, grabbed on a fresh start). Let it run for a bit. Put it back in reverse, nothin. It looks like adjusting the bands didn't help (as expected by now) so it looks like I'm off to tear the trans back out and get ready for the rebuild.

Yep. Reverse servo piston seal is shot. You tried the free and easy stuff. Now its time for a rebuild.

Thats what I was afraid of. Any suggestions on any trans mods I should do while its out? I was thinking of throwing a transgo shift kit in it. Would it be beneficial and worth the money to throw an aftermarket cooler on it? Anything else I should know? Tips? Tricks?

Well here is an update! I am currently in the process of rebuilding my trans and am stuck until the trans shop I get my parts from opens again tommorow. My cousin and I took everything apart and found a few different problems.

1st thing is that when my dad put the oil pump in he didn't realize that there were two seals on the back side of it that had to go on and he left them off. Well, I'm sure this resulted in some blow by and the lack of pressure for reverse.

2nd is that the inside of the reverse drum shaft was all scored up and the piece that it rides on ( I think it is called the output shaft support) was all scored up (This is why i am stuck, I have to replace these parts)

3rd we found while putting in my TFOD JR shift kit. We took apart the overdrive part to put in the new spring that the kit came with and we found out that the old spring was snapped into two pieces.

So, overall, It is probably a good thing I took it out to rebuild it. Now we are going to put everything back together and hope for the best. Oh yeah, we are considering putting in a different lever for the kickdown band. The one that is in my truck is a 2.5 and my cousin has an extra 3.8 that came out of his 71 demon (727 trans). Does anyone have any input on this of whether or not I should do it.

Thanks for the support guys!

You didnt put sealing rings on the pump? If you didnt put those on you wouldn't have 3rd gear, or a badly slipping 3rd gear, and it would affect reverse as well.

The 4th accumulator spring is a common one to break. Thats why most kits give you a new one.

And yes, scoring on the case center support is very common. Thats from the genius design of no lube in park.

Yeah, that's what my cousin and I figured happened to reverse and 3rd gear. All I could get was 1st and 2nd. It all makes sense now. Do you think the scoring on the case probably happened before or after the new pump (without sealing rings) was installed? What do you think about changing out the 2.5 lever with the 3.8? My cousin said it would give me a quicker shift but I want to make sure that it won't mess other stuff up in the process. Thanks again
