Default Using 4wd

Last night on my way down to work the roads were covered in a very fine layer of black ice. I immediately became very cautious when my back end started to slide on me while I was driving down the roads. I did not feel comfortable driving in 2wd, so I put it in 4wd. I wasn't sure if this was a bad thing to do seeing the roads were not covered in obvious snow, but were covered in a slippery coating of ice. Is this ok to do if the roads are clearly covered in sleek ice?

should be. 4wd is for off road and icy, snowy, and rainy conditions. I live in houston so i never experience the cold stuff but i usually use it when it rains.

You got to be kidding! Ice yes, but why would you use it when it rains?

If it was black ice then there is no help unless you have studded tires. Whether 2wd or 4wd Black ice will still send you slippin and sliding all over the place.

I've used it in rainy conditions a few times because the rear wheels have a tendancy to hydroplane even at low speeds, unless I have something heavy in the bed. Also, it improves wet road traction to get across busy intersections where cross traffic does not stop, allowing you to get across in a small opening.

As long as one of your tires can spin when you turn, 4WD is fine, therefore on ice it is fine.

But like they said, 4WD isn't much help on ice.

I think an old saying my grandfather used to tell me comes into play here," Son, four wheel drives go like hell, but remember, they stop like everything else".
