Trailer Towing
I just bought the Big Red Dodge. Can anyone tell me how much of a travel trailer i can tow with this truck? Looking at a 28 footer that weighs around 3500 lbs.
The Big Red Dodge is a Ram1500 4X4 Sport with off road package. Dealer also said it had the tow package but i'm not sure about that. Anyone that pulls a camper, travel trailer let me know if the Big Red Dodge will handle it............Thanks.

RE: Trailer Towing
In general you can recognize a factory tow package because it will have the heavy 7-pole wiring plug that is mounted facing sideways on the receiver. Additionally, most all of the factory towing packages came with an additional transmission oil cooler in front of the radiator. The real key to the factory towing package is the fact that the trailer brake wiring is already present. If you have a factory towing package then there will be a header under the dash to which you attach your trailer brake control module. This is really nice because you don't need to run a wire to the back of truck to connect to the trailer plug. Trailer brakes are essential if you are going to tow heavy trailers. I have a 98 1500 with a 318 and a factory towing package. I occasionally tow a 6,000 lb trailer without a problem. Be sure you get your trailer brakes setup properly and you should have no problem with a 3,500 lb trailer. Beware of how you load it though as RVs can almost double in gross weight with the additon of supplies.
cheers,

RE: Trailer Towing
first double check the trailor weight,I have had trailors for years and can not believe that there is a 28 footer at 3500#.I currently have a 24 footer and its dry weight is 5500#.you also need to look at the tongue weight of the trailor, thats the downforce weight applied to the hitch, and what the truck is rated for.all these numbers should be in the manual if you got one with the truck.just look under towing.remember look at the truck ratings and not the hitch ratings,I put on my own hitch and it will carry more than the truck is rated for.

RE: Trailer Towing
I also can't believe that it only weighs 3500#. I have a 28 footer and it weighs close to 7000#. I towed that trailer with a Ram 2500 with a 5.9 V8 360. It was not easy for that truck. (hills). I have since bought a Ram 2500 with the 8.0 V10. I have not towed yet. I am really looking forward to trying it though. If your trailer weighs anything close to what mine does, I think you need more truck.
