OK, get your mind outta the gutter! LOL Went to get a battery for my truck this morning and to my surprise the new battery is like 1/3 larger than the old one. New one group 27, old one was a group 34 ? That battery was in it when I got the truck about 7 years ago. I almost went with another 34 just because of how much lighter it was.
Anyway, I was wondering since the new bat is so much larger,( larger plates and more plates I would imagine) what other difference(benifits if any) there is, as opposed to getting the smaller one with the same CCA ?
TIA John

A larger surface area on the plates would be preferred if the 2 batteries are manufactured the exact same way. The lead plates usually break up in an old battery due to road shocks and that's what typically causes a battery to lose it's charge and not hold a recharge. The bigger the plates, the longer it'll take to hit the point it malfunctions.
A battery that has the cores separated and sealed in impact resistant epoxy like the optima series, are supposed to resist this even longer.

i just bought a new one too. mine was just the opposite. more cold cca. mine still had the one from factory. i think the old one was 750cca and the new one was 1000 cca. the bad thing was it wasnt my battery it was my alternator. oh well, a little prevenative maintenence i guess. my alt. cost almost 300$. wow. couldnt believe it.

$300 WTH ? You get one gold plated? lol The reason I replaced the battery was because if forget to turn my fog lites off for like 2 minutes, the battery would be dead. And when I'm in traffic and have to stop and idle, the headlights go dim. if I rev it up they get brighter. So I'm assuming I ruined the battery the numerous times I killed it by leaving the lites on. I have a nice tester and the alt puts out 14 volts, so hopefully it didn't get beat on too much.

I guess I do things different from most. The first thing I did when I got my 96, several years ago, was go to the junk yard and get an alternator, take it to the near by rebuilder for him to go through so I got a good spare. 120 amp alt. about 50 bucks, 40 for checking and new brushes and bearings.
