Default Axle swap question...

I have a 1999 1500 4X4. Has anyone tried to swap axles with another make? Is there any way to adapt the speedo and ABS brakes? Thanks....

Are you asking about gearing, axle shafts or the whole assembly? For the assembly it can be very indepth trying to find the width you need, and cutting and mounting the brackets can be a pain in the ***, if you have to cut then you have to find shafts that are the same size. It just goes on from there, you would have better luck and it would be easier just to build your own.

Well, if you can find the one that has the same measurements, then it wont be that hard.

I can't remember where on the axel you measure to, but spring mounts are easy as you can weld them where you need them, but it is a different point you measure to for the width I wanna say it is to the point where the brake assembly bolts up but I am sure some one will be able to tell you exactly where or Google could help you out.

Well, obviously swapping in a 2nd gen 60 front and 60/70 rear would be the easiest - its pretty much bolt in. But you have made it fairly clear you are using other axles. Which ones?

Search on PS.com, there is tons of axle swapping info on that site. I have seen anything from older ford ('79 ish) king pin 60's to a newer ford super duty dana 60 axles swapped in a 2nd gen dodge on that site, but they all need custom work done.

Search for Archers build on PS.com. Some guys even added the tone ring/sensor to a different rear axle. Great tech.

Well, again, what axles are you using? If you can find a rear 60 or 70 out of a 2nd gen dodge the speed sensor will plug right in. If you are using something else it will be custom work. A few guys on PS.com have adapted a tone ring/sensor to a different axle, but it would surely be much easier to just use a rear axle out of a newer dodge.
