A few months back i replaced one of the front hubs, tightened down the nut and installed the cotter pin back into it. Now it seems like the hub is alittle loose again (they tell me they do this after replacing a hub and driving it for awhile). My question is if anyone has replaced a hub themselves if they torqued it down to any certain torque? If so what is it? If not ill just tighten it up alittle more and call it good.

 

I never replaced mine with a new one. But i have had it off to do the ball joints and such. And its been since last march when i did it and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. But it makes me want to go check it now see i have the same issue as yourself.

 

Assuming we are talking about a 4 wheel drive , 175 ft pounds. Please fill in your SIG completely.

Yes, like said above its 175 ft. lbs. If you drove on it for a while with improper torque (too much or too little), it could very well be shot now. The bearing relies on this nut (with proper torque specs) to hold it all together. If its loose already (wiggling), it is most likely already worn out and will need to be replaced again.

 

Yea its been that way for at least a few weeks now (thats when i first noticed it anyways.) Nothing like replacing 2 hubs in 3 months.

 

So is the u-joint on that gonna need replacing also? I'm not hearing anything coming from the front yet (like i did when i replaced the hub the first time).

 

No, not necessarily. A bad wheel bearing wont effect the axle shaft u-joint. If you just replaced the joint it should be fine.

But, lack of proper torque on the wheel bearing will wear it out fast. I would torque it down to 175 ft. lbs. and see if it wiggles still. If it does, then it should soon be replaced (there should be no movement).

 

I replaced the u-joint since i was in there replacing the hub at the time so that should be fine. Thanks for the advice and i will get that hub to the right torque and take it from there i guess.
