Yep deceleration noise is normally the pinion, and since the trucks are known for loose pimping due to the crush sleeves you've probably got a pinion riding the ring gear.

Thank you. I did live on 11 acres with tools that I could fix this all myself, but an F5 tornado took away the tools and home, now living in the city, so Im letting Firestone fix it. They called this morning and it will be 1300 for replace and labor-and they confirmed the rear axle is locked up. Ugggghhhh

I know im reviving a old thread.. But how much would it take to repair the rear end in a 04 dodge ram, 2wd, 4.7 motor, automatic. I have a whistling sound on acceleration and I believe now its getting worse, I seem to hear more of a roaring sound now when I drive it for longer periods of time. Figured ill have my local mechanic rebuild it or whatever this tax time.

i order all of my rear end kits from ringpinion.com. they should carry a full kit with all of the seals and bearings you'll need to rebuild your rear end. you'll still need to get the gears seperately. i'd search around and price everything out; call a few shops and see what labor is; ask them to quote you for prices. Some shops don't mark up parts on rebuilds so it may be cheaper for them to get everything they need.
