Have you done the diaper mod?

Are you saying you charge 400 for labor on top of the price for parts, or the whole thing? My mechanic said it would be $600 if it was just a bearing kit, $1000 if it needed a ring and pinion.

And I searched all your posts, and I never did see anything about the rear end. I may not have looked hard enough, though.

I charge 400 for just labor. I usually have the customer buy the parts they want. I dont have any special deals on rear end parts, so i can buy parts at the same price my customers can so i dont really want to fool with buying parts.

Royal Purple is maybe the best stuff you can buy for your truck. There is no substitute.

Default How could you tell the rear axle was bad?

Hope you can help me. I just bought a used 1995 Dodge ram with a 318 v8 and 5 speed standard tanny. It seemed to run good so I bought it. Going down the highway yesterday it made a whining noise for a while but later stopped. Today I was out driving around, and just as I got home-when I would take my foot off the gas it emitted a LOUD noise, along with popping and grinding like gear teeth crunching. The tranny had been shifting just fine, so I didnt suspect the clutch. But everytime I decellerated, came the loud noise. I called a firestone store who told me they thought it was the clutch. So I attempted to drive it there for service, but the problem got worse and worse to where it would actually bring me to a stop. When I would give it gas to get going again another loud "pop" would happen. I fiannly gave up and had it towed in. Does this sound like the rear axle going out? It only does this on decelleration

Rear axle or t-case...... Cost can vary dramatically simply by location, but, yours is making expensive noises..... my guess is, you are going to end up replacing the t-case, or, rebuilding the rear completely. either way, you are looking at around a grand for parts and labor, if its the rear end, probably more...... Sorry man.
